Description Experiments were carried out at the high-voltage laboratory of Huazhong University of Science & Technology, Wuhan, China. Positive long sparks were produced in a 1.4-m rod-plane air gap, and the related voltage waveforms, current waveforms, direct images and Schlieren photographs were measured synchronously. Experimental data provide the direct evidence that the discharge channel during the dark period is not always dark, but emits weak light, and the length of the faint bright channel is nearly the same as that of the remaining low-density channels. Moreover, the capacitive current due to the varying applied voltage is thought to be the reason for the channel illumination in dark periods according to the experimental results. Two sets of experimental data are provided in this dataset.

Date Jul 25, 2019; Dec 14, 2020
Type Data 1: The data were obtained on Jul 25, 2019, in which the applied voltage (unit: kV), current (unit: A), direct images and Schlieren images are included. The discharge current is measured with a non-inductive shunt resistor of 25 Ω. Direct images are captured with a high-speed camera (Phantom V1212) operating at a frequency of 190,000 frames per second (fps) with an exposure time of 3.72 μs. Schlieren images are recorded with a high-speed camera (Photron SA-X2) operating at 200,000 fps with an exposure time of 3.98 μs.
Data 2: The data were obtained on Dec 14, 2020, in which the applied voltage (unit: kV), current (unit: A) and direct images are included. The discharge current is measured with a non-inductive shunt resistor of 10kΩ.Direct images are captured with a high-speed camera (Photron SA-X2) operating at 200,000 fps with an exposure time of 3.38 μs.
Format For both data (data 1 and data 2), the voltage and current waveforms are in origin .opj format, and all images are in .tif format.
